Office Invasion - Independent Film by Motion Story

Updated: Aug 30, 2022

Motion Story gave us a good movie from the Buddy/Coming-of-age side of life. They have braved the ire of South African consumers, taking them to the world of Sci-fi which has always been a tough sell for our Drama/Comedy/Dramedy/Thriller-Only-IF-it-is-hella-dramatic market. I jest, of course, however the preferences of our nation as an audience have been clear for years. They love, we love, I love our episodic content, which allows you to follow the familiar and here we are in sci-fi land, seeing familiar actors playing familiar parts however the content is challenging to our tastebuds as they are used to these monstrous-budget Hollywood Sci-fi films.

It has been said that the content is no longer judged according to the budget, at least that's what Google has said with regards to the YouTube content creator's playbook. Office invasion riding the Top 10 for as long as it did also speaks to the fact that the plotline connects. It was left nice and simple, the friend's have clear character arcs and the way they save the day is so well within their daily capabilities you see it coming.

Which brings me to my only problem with the Movie, brave as it is, quaint as it is, it lives within a level of predictability that I find a little bit difficult to bare. Luckily I am not the only person who was being sold to. I feel as if this has been more of an exercise in stretching the audience, pulling more people from abroad towards South African cinema (The movie is provided in various languages) and with regard to that I believe it has worked. I wish we had more options on Netflix though - considering we ourselves have 11 official languages and an appetite for learning them - and that maybe the last part of being able to bridge the gap from person to person.

I think overall well done to Motion Story and The Wolmarans Family.
